The USGS annually monitors groundwater levels in thousands of wells in the United States. Groundwater level data are collected and stored as either discrete field-water-level measurements or as continuous time-series data from automated recorders.

Data from some of the continuous record stations are relayed to USGS offices nationwide through telephone lines or by satellite transmissions. This book is the result of my journeys through the literature and as a geologist in several parts of the world. It has been written for students of geology of all ages, in the simplest terms possible, and it has one objective: to provide a basis for an understanding of the mechanical role of water in geology.

The Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS) is the official repository for the records of existing wells that have been drilled in the state of Illinois. With records for overwells, the interactive water wells map allows users to explore a range of information including the location, depth, and bedrock topography for all recorded wells in Illinois.

The colored dots on this map depict streamflow conditions as a percentile, which is computed from the period of record for the current day of the stations with at least 30 years of record are used.
